Oscars—Actors Who Won the SAG Award but Not the Oscar
When most people think of the Academy Awards (the Oscars), they think of legendary actors who’ve won the Best Actor or Best Actress trophy. Although the SAG Awards (given out by the Screen Actors Guild) are far less famous, they are still extremely prestigious and many actors have taken home a SAG Award but not an Oscar. In this article, we’ll take a look at just five of the most notable actors who’ve been honored with a SAG Award but denied an Oscar win.
Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably one of the greatest living actors, having won three Best Actor Academy Awards and three BAFTAs. However, he has yet to win a SAG Award. Day-Lewis was nominated for his performances in My Left Foot and In the Name of the Father and was included in the team nomination for Out of Africa but came up empty.
Cate Blanchett
Despite being nominated for a stunning seven Academy Awards throughout her career, Cate Blanchett has never taken home a Best Actress Oscar. Blanchett was awarded the SAG Award for her 2001 performance as Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth. But it wasn’t enough to secure the Oscar. Despite this, Blanchett is still one of the most creatively acclaimed and respected actresses in the world.
Sam Worthington
Australian actor Sam Worthington has starred in some of the biggest movies of the past few decades, including Avatar and the Terminator franchise. Although his performances in those films were critically acclaimed and commercially successful, he has never been recognized by the Academy. However, in 2009 Worthington was starred for his performance in Avatar and won the SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Will Smith
Will Smith is one of the world’s biggest movie stars and has been rightly recognized for his work by many awards organizations, but not the Academy. Smith has been nominated and received the SAG Award twice, for his performances in Two of the Legend and The Pursuit of Happyness.
Nicole Kidman
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has been one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood since the 1990s. Among her many accolades, she has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for her brilliant performance in The Hours. However, she was unable to translate her success in the film into a SAG Award despite her 2002 nomination in what was one of the most intense Best Actress categories of all time.
The Oscars—or Academy Awards—are the most prestigious and well-known awards ceremonies in the world. Actors and actresses from around the world strive to be recognized for their hard work, as a win or nomination can be the key to superstardom. The top prize is an Oscar, but there are many other awards, including SAG Awards from the Screen Actors Guild.
In this article, we’ve looked at five examples of high-profile actors and actresses who’ve won a SAG Award but can’t quite break into the Academy Awards club. These include the three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, seven-time Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett, Avatar’s Sam Worthington, Will Smith and The Hours’ Nicole Kidman.
The talent and performances of these actors have been recognized by the Screen Actors Guild, but they have so far been overlooked by the Academy. We can only hope that in the future they are able to finally get the recognition they deserve.
