The Originals: Top Times Klaus Mikaelson Was the Worst
There is no shortage of entertainment surrounding Klaus Mikaelson, the original Hybrid vampire-werewolf character from the CW supernatural show, The Originals. He has thus far been the central character for the show, featured in both flashbacks and storylines throughout the series. Many viewers have indeed become quite attached to the character in spite of – and more commonly because of – his bouts of villainy.
Klaus Mikaelson is an intriguing character because he can sometimes be both the villain and hero in the same episode. It is no surprise, therefore, that we put together a list of the times when Klaus Mikaelson exposed his “worst” nature over the course of The Originals.
1: Backstabbing Elijah
One of the signature Klaus Mikaelson moves is backstabbing his own brother Elijah. Time and again, Klaus puts his own desires and ambitions ahead of his own family’s safety by cutting out Elijah from important decisions and sometimes going to extreme lengths to ensure Elijah does not interfere with his schemes.
The worst instance of this occurred when Klaus decided to turn his back on his brother after creating an immortal/undead Daughter, Hope in season 5. Here, Klaus abandoned Elijah and Hope, leaving his brother to choose between staying in New Orleans or going after their mother in order to protect their niece.
2: Betraying Hayley
Klaus has his own share of issues when it comes to trust and caring deeply for only those closest to him. This became clear when he turned his back on werewolf Hayley Marshall after she helped Klaus reunite with his long-lost daughter, Hope.
The betrayal started as far back as season two when Klaus initially agreed to help Hayley in her efforts but later stated that he will not keep his word to help Hayley. Later in the season, he viciously attacked Hayley after using her as a pawn in his own plans to survive the dominance of his sister Rebekah. This was quite possibly one of the worst moments for viewers to witness.
3: Killing Marcel
The Originals first features Marcel as a dangerous but lovable villain over the course of season one. However, Klaus’s jealousy of his protegé is apparent. He attempts to punish and control Marcel for even the smallest of infractions for several seasons.
Eventually, he does the unthinkable and fails to abide by his own promise of an army of vampires loyal only to him, instead he calls upon a group of werewolfs to take out Marcel and his own army. This betrayal creates a power vacuum in New Orleans that his family struggles to protect.
4: His Treatment of Caroline
The glimpse of a softer, more humane side of Klaus is seen briefly when he is with Caroline in season four. Unfortunately, many viewers will remember the moment where he backstabbed Caroline who had held up her side of the bargain with him and took her vampirism away.
Klaus casually showed Caroline the door when he found out about the Hybrid, Hope and her possible interactions with the supernatural world. Naturally, this was met with shock and wide-eyed disbelief from viewers.
5: Turning Rebekah Vampiric
Klaus gave up his father’s offer, which would have enabled all the Originals to become human, so that he could obtain revenged against werewolfs of the Southern region. This resulted in him biting Rebekah and turning her into a hybrid against her will.
Whenever Rebekah asked Klaus to turn her back into a human, Klaus would simply brush her off or come up with an excuse to avoid giving her an answer. This desperate attempt at escaping from the Hybrid curse was a sad moment for fans that had been hoping for a happy ending for all the Mikaelson family members.
6: Turning on Everyone
The list of Klaus’ betrayals is quite lengthy but the most disturbing betrayal yet was when he turned against everyone (his family included) in season four where he declared an open war against all in the French Quarter. He even went as far as to publicly execute his own brother Kol in order to prove his dominance in the supernatural world.
At other points during this season, he schemed with bad witches and bribed Marcel not to mention his partnering with them as well as his succubus wife’s identity. He even shockingly told Elijah that he was useless and had no use in helping him.
Klaus Mikaelson is undoubtedly a complex and often misunderstood character. He is equally a hero and villain. No matter which of these characters we identify with, the show’s focus on Klaus and his various betrayals makes for compelling viewing. Though viewers cannot help but sympathize with Klaus, the aforementioned moments were some of the most villainous acts that he performed throughout The Originals and remain firmly etched in the minds of viewers.
