Stephen Colbert: The Late Night Host with a Political Edge
Stephen Colbert is a passionate and witty late night talk show host who has earned a reputation for carving out a special niche in the entertainment industry, one that is heavily steeped in political satire and comedic timing. Not only is Stephen Colbert an expert in improvising and mocking the current political affairs of the day, but he also mocks the media’s reporting on those very same topics. Stephen’s Background
Stephen Tyrone Colbert was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Northwestern University and majored in theater and english. After graduation, he spent several years acting in Chicago theater, including Second City and Improv Olympic, before joining “The Daily Show” as a correspondent in 1997. After spending several years as a correspondent for “The Daily Show”, Colbert was recruited by Comedy Central to host “The Colbert Report”.
The Colbert Report
“The Colbert Report” was a satirical news program hosted by Stephen Colbert. The show was modeled after “The Daily Show” but with a much more overtly political emphasis. On the show, Colbert played a self-aggrandizing and smug conservative pundit, a style he honed over the years and one which became a massively popular and successful character. The show ran for nine years, ending in 2014.
Political Satire
Stephen’s approach to political satire is both innovative and long-lasting. His character on “The Colbert Report” is often parodied, as he often went against the grain of other popular shows such as “The Daily Show”, creating something that was both biting and hilarious. Over the years, Colbert has featured guests on his show ranging from Presidents and world leaders to actors, musicians and unique personalities. After running “The Colbert Report” for nine years, some of Stephen’s most notable interviews have included former President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and numerous others. His ability to poke fun of himself while still giving serious political opinions and statements has made him increasingly popular, especially among the younger generations.
Political Activism
Colbert has also used his show as a platform to make political statements and take a stance on important issues. In 2010, Colbert testified in front of Congress about the plight of migrant workers in the U.S. He has also been a major advocate for LGBT rights and the legalization of marijuana. He has also hinted at running for President one day, although nothing has been officially announced.

In 2015, Stephen Colbert replaced David Letterman as the host of “The Late Show”, one of the most recognized and respected late night television programs in the country. Much like “The Colbert Report”, Colbert’s hosting of “The Late Show” has given way to biting political satire but with a much more laid-back and inviting style. Not to mention there have been recurring themes and sketches such as“Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, in addition to the usual star-studded guest lineup.

Currently, there is no question as to Stephen Colbert’s immense talent and influence as a political and comedic commentator in the late night television landscape. As the current political and social climate shifts, and a great many discussions and debates become more prevalent in this day and age, Colbert is sure to remain one of the most relevant, outspoken and respected voices in entertainment.
